Why bathrooms wear over time

Daily water and steam, chemical cleaners, building movement, temperature changes and ageing materials place stress on bathrooms. Check grout, silicone, tiles, shower screens and surrounding building materials regularly.

How water damage can spread

Small surface defects can allow moisture into hidden areas. Where the waterproofing system is also compromised, water can reach timber framing, skirting boards, adjacent rooms, floors and cabinetry. Visible damage may appear away from the source.

Early warning signs to look for

Look for cracked or missing grout, loose tiles, mouldy silicone, water pooling outside the shower, swollen skirting boards, peeling paint, water stains below the bathroom, musty smells and damp carpet nearby. Arrange an inspection if you notice changes.

Understanding the source of a leak

Failed grout, degraded silicone, building movement, waterproofing defects, incorrect installation and ageing materials can contribute to leaks. The place where damage appears may not be the source. An inspection helps identify the cause and suitable repair; plumbing faults may need a licensed plumber.

Traditional grout and premium epoxy grout

Traditional cement grout can absorb moisture and become worn or cracked. Suitable premium epoxy grout offers strong water and stain resistance and easier cleaning. Grout is one part of the shower system: it does not replace a sound waterproofing membrane or resolve structural defects.

Silicone and waterproofing layers

Tiles and grout form the surface layer. Flexible silicone joints accommodate movement at junctions, while the waterproofing membrane protects the substrate below. Each layer has a different role, so a surface repair must be appropriate for the condition underneath.

Weather and Your Bathroom

Humidity and wet weather make ventilation and regular checks especially useful for local homes. Keep an eye on persistent dampness and mould, allow surfaces to dry, and address deteriorating seals before problems grow.

Humidity, ventilation and drying

Run your bathroom exhaust fan during and after showering, and allow fresh air in when practical. Wipe down wet surfaces and give the room time to dry. Persistent dampness or mould that returns after cleaning deserves attention.

What to check after heavy rain

Look for new damp patches, water stains, peeling paint or swollen skirting boards around the bathroom and adjoining rooms. Note when the signs appear and take photos. Moisture appearing after rain may have a different source from a shower leak, so an inspection should establish the cause before repairs are chosen.

Outdoor balcony work

Rain, surface moisture and temperature can affect preparation, application and curing for balcony resealing and grout replacement. Suitable conditions depend on the products and the site. We confirm timing after inspection and may reschedule outdoor work when conditions are unsuitable.

Before and after your booked repair

Follow the preparation and curing instructions provided for your particular job. Weather conditions do not replace those instructions. Contact Shower Expert if you are unsure whether the area is ready for work or use.

Everyday maintenance

Use a suitable mild pH-neutral cleaner and soft cloths. Run the exhaust fan, dry surfaces after use and arrange repairs for leaks promptly. Avoid harsh acid-based cleaners, abrasive chemicals and metal brushes; follow the care instructions for your installed products.

Repair mistakes to avoid

Do not cover degraded grout with a new skim coat or apply fresh silicone over old, mouldy silicone. Temporary patching can conceal the underlying problem. Proper preparation and an inspection-led repair help avoid repeated failures.

Surface repairs and structural repairs

A suitable surface repair may involve an epoxy grout upgrade and silicone replacement. Where hidden damage or failed waterproofing is present, more extensive work such as a shower base rebuild may be needed. The guide illustrates these different repair approaches.

Your annual bathroom check

Check grout for cracks and gaps; silicone for peeling and mould; tiles for movement; walls and skirtings for moisture; the exhaust fan for ventilation; drainage for pooling; and shower screen seals for wear. Keep a note of changes and arrange an inspection when needed.

Protecting your home over time

Regular maintenance can help preserve your bathroom’s appearance and condition, reduce the risk of hidden deterioration and support buyer confidence. Prompt attention to warning signs is more useful than waiting for extensive visible damage.
